Updated specifically for California residential buildings, Dwelling Construction Under the 2007 California Building Code (CBC) provides information specific to designers, code officials, and contractors needing to use the 2007 CBC based on the International Building Code, rather than the International Residential Code. This resource examines the design and construction of detached one- and two-family dwellings. This review is from: Dwelling Construction Under the 2007 California Building Code, Revised Edition (Paperback)

Helpful if its all you have but its now one version out of date. I recommended it before the new code cycle adopted the 2010 California Residential Code(CRC) at the beginning of 2011.

As a residential designer I recommend the getting the full 2010 CRC if you work in California and are involved in residential design or construction. The full 2010 residential code book is over 700 pages. There are substantial changes from the 2007 version which was not broken out from the full 2007 CBC as it was in the underlying International Building Code was with the International Residential Code.

The California codes are based on the International Codes but contain changes specific for California. The code reference sections are different in each version leading to a lot of confusion if you are making or reading code section references relying on the IBC/IRC. or the 2007CBC.

The California codes are accessible free online since they are part of California law as opposed the to the proprietary IBC/IRC.

Even at 700 pages the full 2010 CRC leaves many areas uncovered other than by reference to the other codes. I find it easier to own the residential code in a physical binder and to look up the referenced sections of the electrical, plumbing, mechanical, green building codes as needed online. One difference from the IBC/IRC is that the 2010 CRC/CBC incorporate the code requirements for the Urban/Wildlands Interface areas which comprise much of rural California and which are not part of the International Codes.

With construction as slow as its been since the last code cycle I find that few contractors have even seen the new code books much less become familiar with them. Most of us became familiar with the old Uniform Building Code and the old CBC adapted from it and only had to absorb the incremental changes slowly over many years. I now believe that is necessary to become familiar with these new and more comprehensive codes and I am unaware of any really good comprehensive shortcut guides for California.
