As ethnic groups clash, the international community faces the challenge of how to respond with solutions to bring about peace. In Ethnic Conflict, Jesse and Williams bridge three sub-fields of political science: international relations, comparative politics, and political psychology, allowing for greater insight. They systematically apply a levels of analysisindividual, domestic, and international framework to ethnic conflict to better explore and understand its complexity. Five case study chapters apply the books framework to disputes around the world and include coverage of Bosnia, the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, and Sudan. Rich in detail, these robust case studies never lose sight of the books analytical framework, giving students a tool to understand systematically the unique set of contributing causes to each case of conflict.

Students will appreciate the books logical presentation, and excellent pedagogical features including detailed maps that show political, demographic and cultural data.

This book provides an excellent look in to some of the largest ethnic conflicts that have happened in recent years, and are happening still today. It covers topics such as Northern Ireland, Sudan, Israel and Palestine, and more. It is structured in a way that is not too difficult to understand, and describes to the reader why and how each conflict started, who the major players were, and where the conflict stands today. The background for each conflict is unbiased and historical, informing the reader why different conflicts start and in what way. This approach makes it easier to understand something that is often difficult to understand-why ethnic conflicts and genocide occur. Additionally, the author of the book provides information on different theories on how to end ethnic conflicts, as well as their own theories and opinions as to why ethnic conflicts exist and different ways to approach the resolution of them. This is a great read for anyone interested in the study of ethnically based violence and conflict, or anyone who just wants to understand more of what is going on in the world.
